How to Apply Feng Shui With Your Rugs

Incorporating feng shui into your home could do wonders for your health, happiness, success, and relationships.

Incorporating feng shui into your home could do wonders for your health, happiness, success, and relationships. Feng shui means "wind and water" and it is related to the philosophy of Taoism.

This philosophy is focused on the idea that human life is strongly connected to the environment around it and nature, and the way to be happy is to flow with your environment.

When you bring feng shui into your home, you are arranging your rooms so that they are balanced and connected to the natural world.

The first thing you need to know before using your rugs to incorporate feng shui into your home is the different elements that are the basis of the philosophy.

1) Wood - vitality/health/growth

• shape - rectangle

• colours - greens/blues/browns

 • areas - family/wealth

2) Fire - passion/joy/creativity

• shape - triangular/pointy

• colour - red/purple/bright orange/pink

 • areas - fame

3) Earth - self-care/grounded/nourishment/stability

 • shape - flat/square

 • colour - brown/orange/yellow/beige/sandy

 • areas - health/knowledge/partnerships

4) Water - shifting/flowing/ease/harmony

• shape - wavy/curvy

• colour - black/blue

• areas- career

5) Metal - precise/productivity/discipline

• shape - circle/sphere

• colour - white/metallic/grey

• areas - helpful people/children

These different elements can help to boost these areas of your life by encouraging their energy (chi) to flow through your home. You can use a feng shui map to decide where they need to be placed to promote the different areas. There are two schools of thought on this: traditional and Western. But either way, you can map out your home using them to find out which parts of your house correspond to the different areas.

It is best to start by choosing a couple of areas that you want to improve in your life, find out where they are placed in your home, and then redesign that space to incorporate them. So if you want to improve your career, you would find the part of your home that corresponds to that, and then use lots of waves and curves in blacks and blues to improve how that energy flows to the space.

Is it becoming more obvious how you can use rugs to apply feng shui? Yes, you can choose rugs that correspond to the element that you are trying to flow to that place.

1) Family/wealth

A green, blue, or brown rectangular rug or rug with a rectangular design.

2) Fame

A rug with triangles or pointy geometric shapes in reds, purples, bright orange, or pinks.

3) Health/knowledge/partnerships

A square rug, or rug with a square design, in browns, oranges, beige, sandy, or yellow.

4) Career

A rug with a wavy or curvy design in black or blue.

5) Helpful people/children

A circular rug, or rug with circle designs, in white, metallic, or grey.

You can also use rugs to create a balance in the elements throughout your home and to improve the flow between the different areas by merging the different elements.

The bottom line

Rugs are a great way of incorporating feng shui into your home. They are incredibly versatile in their shapes, patterns, and colour schemes so you can easily find a design that will help improve the flow of the element you are trying to promote. \
